Photographs and stories about agriculture, water and people in the Imperial Valley

The photographs and text in this book are about agriculture in the Imperial Valley, California. They are also about the people involved in agribusiness who may be overlooked in the debate about agricultural, urban, or environmental uses of water.

The Imperial Valley is changing. And water—scarce, fresh, water—is at the fulcrum point of the transformation. The supply of water from the Colorado River is declining while demand is increasing. Both agricultural production in the Imperial Valley and the tenuous future of the Salton Sea are dependent on a substantial flow of water into the Valley and then into the Salton Sea. At the same time burgeoning population centers in the Southwest are coveting water from the Imperial Valley for urban uses. There are also competing social and economic uses for water being debated within the Valley.
